These 90-minute, monthly classes will explore the six poetic meters in a six-month sequence. You may register for one class or for the full sequence. Registration is limited to 25 participants per class.

Our most ancient cultures revered poetic meters for their powers of inspiration, remembrance, pleasure, healing, and enchantment. Under the guidance of poetry witch Annie Finch, Meter Magic Spiral Journey will immerse you in the secrets and complexities of the six basic English meters. We will read aloud, discuss and practice scansion, as we explore each meter.

The Meter Magic Class is a monthly deep-dive into the rhythms of poetry and their power to shape language, thought, and even personal growth. Each session focuses on a different poetic meter—its sound, structure, and emotional resonance.


Led by acclaimed poet Annie Finch, these classes combine technical learning with creative exploration. You’ll read powerful poems and spells, learn to identify and scan meter, and practice writing in the month’s featured rhythm. There's also space to ask questions and receive personalized feedback from Annie on your own metrical writing, when you’re ready.


Whether you’re a seasoned poet or simply intrigued by the magic of rhythm, this class offers tools to:

Annie is a poet, prosodist, critic, teacher, and performance artist. Recognized for her deep command of meter and poetic craft, she teaches courses on poetry, meter, scansion, and her original system of self-transformation through rhythmical writing.

Spellcasting Session 5: Amphibrachs

Each month, join poet and teacher Annie Finch for this online, guided circle designed to help you reconnect with yourself and your intentions. Inspired by ancient traditions and Annie’s own personal practice, we will explore how the energies of the five sacred directions—East, South, West, North, and Center—can offer insight into your current life journey. We'll begin with journaling and sharing in a supportive environment. Then, using a poetic practice called Meter Magic, we’ll shape our intentions into a simple, powerful spell—a poetic “amulet” you can return to for strength and inspiration throughout the month. No prior experience with poetry or magic is needed. If you identify as a woman or gender-nonconforming, you are warmly welcome to join. Each month, you’ll receive suggestions on what to bring or prepare ahead of time, along with access to a private class space for participants. Come as you are—curious, tired, joyful, uncertain. There’s space for all in the circle.
